= 4.8) (NS) for the diets C and 0, respectively. Lipid and fatty acid intestinal digestibility of oil were calculated by difference to be 50.8% (s = 9.7) and 71.2% (s = 6.2). Energy gain was calculated as the mean of the respiratory quotient (RQ) and carbon-nitrogen (CN) balances. The efficiency (kl) of metabolizable energy (ME) utilization was computed by assuming that the maintenance requirement of lactating cows was 293 kJ NELlkg BW O.7S It was higher for the 0 than for the C diet: 60.8% (s = 3.5) vs 58.4% (s = 2.7), (P < 0.02). The average and confidence limits (p t <o 05 st-!n-) of oil energy values were calculated from individual energy balances obtained with the 2 diets: ME = 19.3 ± 9.7

Ruminal lipid balance and intestinal digestion by dairy cows fed calcium salts of rapeseed oil fatty acids or rapeseed oil.

The effects of supplemental calcium salts of rapeseed oil fatty acids (FA) and rapeseed oil on ruminal metabolism and apparent digestibility of lipids in the small intestine were studied using three multiparous Holstein x Friesian cows in a 3 x 3 Latin square design. Cows fitted with ruminal, duodenal, and ileal cannulas were fed restricted amounts of a control diet (C) containing 65% corn sila...

Effects of dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids on ovarian function and prostaglandin secretion in lactating dairy cows

As lactating cows in severe negative energy balance have poor reproductive performance, the effect of dietary fat supplementation (fish oil, soybean oil) on PGFM secretion, ovarian function and blood metabolites is investigated. In this experiment, the effects of dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids on plasma metabolites, ovarian function and prostaglandin secretion of 20 primiparous Holstein co...

Abomasal infusion of cis or trans fatty acid isomers and energy metabolism of lactating dairy cows.

Diets for dairy cows that provide or induce formation of trans isomers of polyunsaturated fatty acids result in reduced percentages of milk fat. The effect of abomasal infusion of trans-C18:1 fatty acid isomers on energy utilization by mature cows was determined. Six multiparous Holstein cows in midlactation had ad libitum access to a basal diet containing 50% forage and 50% concentrate. Treatm...

Effect of Feeding Quickly Degradable Nitrogen on the Development of Ovarian Follicles in Lactating Dairy Cows

The objective of this study was to examine the effect of an excess intake of quickly degradable nitrogen (QDN) on ovarian follicle development. Twenty lactating dairy cows were fed mixed silage and concentrates twice daily. The control diet was a typical ration for high producing dairy cows in the United Kingdom (crude protein (CP)=17.5%; metabolizable energy (ME)=11.8 MJ/kg DM). The cows were ...

Milk production and composition, ovarian function, and prostaglandin secretion of dairy cows fed omega-3 fats.

Four multiparous Holstein cows were used in a 4 x 4 Latin square experiment to study the effects of fat sources rich in omega-3 fatty acids on milk production and composition, follicular development, and prostaglandin secretion. All cows were fed a total mixed diet containing 60% grass silage and 40% concentrate. The four treatments were concentrates based either on Megalac, formaldehyde-treate...
